GMO Asynchronous and Asymmetric Approvals: bringing lasting solutions to identified problems

Brussels - March 18-19, 2010

For more than a decade, the cultivation and use of genetically modified (GM) crops around the world has steadily expanded as new GM varieties containing innovative traits have been introduced into the market.

In the pipeline is a new generation of GM crops, mainly soybeans, maize, rapeseed, cotton, sugar beet, potatoes and rice containing features that could meet producer and consumer demands in respect not only of agronomic traits such as abiotic stress tolerance, yield enhancements and hybrid vigour, but also high value qualities such as enhanced nutrition and flavor, improved oil and fibre contents, functional foods, improved feed and ease of processing. These traits are now being transferred to crops such as wheat and barley. Also GM crops not intended for export markets or EU authorization are being developed.
