THE ORGANISATION

Biotechnologies, Agroindustry and Health Protection Department

The Biotechnologies, Agroindustry and Health Protection Department operates in the following areas:

  • Biofuels
Objectives: To carry out research, testing, development and fostering of innovation processes and technologies for the production of biofuels with a view to substituting similar fossil-based products.
  • Health Technologies
Objectives: Development of basic know-how, methodologies, procedures and technologies with the aim of transferring the national health system and industries products, drugs and leading systems for the diagnosis and therapy of high-social-impact pathologies - radiobiology and technologies for radiotherapy; technologies and biomarkers for medical diagnostics; plants as biofactories for biodrug production).
  • Technologies for Food Quality and Safety
Objectives: Development of biotechnological methods and tools for higher-quality production; process optimisation in order to preserve the nutritional content and characteristics of food; development of raw materials and functional products for human health; development of omic-technology diagnostics; setting-up of a Centre for Biological Resources (Biobank).
  • Biomedicine
Objectives: Research on environmental and occupational health, radioprotection and therapeutic use of radiation; development of methodologies, procedures and technologies targeted to transferring the biological/biomedical know-how acquired in the ENEA’s radiobiology, analytical cytology, immunology and bioelectromagnetism labs to the national health service, public administration and industries.
  • Quality of chemical and biological measurements
Objectives: Development of metrology applied to chemistry and biology and transfer of stringent metrology criteria related to: characterisation and qualification of materials and processes, exploitation and conservation of the environmental and cultural heritage, safety and health, agro-food sector.
  • Omic Technologies and New Agro-industry Project
Objectives: Development of new methods for nucleic acid sequencing and fractionation of complex genomes; development of technologies for quantitative measurement of gene expression and profiling of proteins and metabolites; within Pharmaplanta consortium: biofactory for antibodies, antimicrobial peptides and vaccines, use of vegetal systems for antigen administration.
  • Integrated Tools for Agro-ecosystems Management
Objectives: Setting-up of functional relationships between global environmental change and agro-ecosystems; suggestion of solutions for reducing agro-ecosystems and rural environment degradation processes in terms of mitigation and adaptation.
  • Metrology of Ionising Radiation
ENEA is by law in charge of: ensuring that actual conditions exist for ionising radiation measurement to be reliable in all sectors of interest: radiotherapy, medical radiodiagnostics, radioprotection in the environment, hospitals and scientific research; carrying out procedures and tests for the homologation and calibration of gauging instruments. The organisation is member of the technical and advisory committee for nuclear security and health protection set up within the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers. INMRI
  • Radioprotection
In the field of radioprotection, ENEA owns unique expertise and intervention skills and can fullfill all kind of needs related not only to the nuclear sector; the Institute for Radioprotection is one of the partners of the EU project ORAMED (Optimization of RAdiation Protection of MEDical staff) dedicated to health. It registers the highest individual doses as well as the highest contribution to the world average collective dose. ENEA is by law in charge of physical radioprotection surveillance.
