Where we are

ENEA's scientific and technological development activities are carried out in nine Research Centres throughout the country, in addition to five laboratories, the headquarters in Rome, a network of regional offices and the Brussels liaison office for participation in European and international research projects.

The largest centre is Casaccia, 30 km north of Rome, with about 1,000 employees. The primary research activities are energy efficiency, renewable sources, nuclear fission, the environment and climate, safety and health, new technologies and materials, sustainable development, innovation of the agro-industrial system, electrical system research and logistics of the National Antarctic Research Programme. The Centre hosts two companies: ,  NUCLECO and SOGIN, operating for the collection, processing and temporary storage of medium- and low-intensity radioactive waste; and, responsible for the management and maintenance of safety of nuclear plants.

The second largest centre is Frascati, with about 440 employees, nationally and internationally known for its research on and development of nuclear fusion, laser sources, particle accelerators and radiation applications.

The Bologna Research Centre hosts about 240 employees, mainly engaged in nuclear reactor safety, antiseismic measures and techniques, development of tools for the analysis and assessment of environmental policies - with particular attention to Life Cycle Assessment - and the protection and promotion of product innovation.

Trisaia, in Matera ’sprovince, is the most important research centre in southern Italy. It hosts about 140 employees mainly engaged in bioenergy, and environmental and materials technologies. SOGIN, and CALEF (industrial applications for lasers and electron beams) and TRAIN consortia (innovative transport technologies) operate in the centre.

The Portici Research Centre, near Naples, hosts about 140 employees and is considered a top-level reference for research on: high-efficiency photovoltaics based on new materials and innovative structures; organic electronics; advanced sensors and networks.

The Brasimone Research Centre, located among the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, about 60 km far from Bologna and Florence, is one of the most important at both national and international level for the study and development of technologies and materials in the sectors of nuclear fission and fusion. It hosts around 90 employees.

The Saluggia Research Centre is located in the province of Vercelli and has 59 employees. Linked to the Centre are external laboratories of Ispra (VA) within the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), where 20 ENEA employees are present. The primary lines of focus are the use of biomass and the analysis of the wood-energy supply chain, the analysis, planning and sustainable management of land and natural resources and the conservation of biodiversity.

The Brindisi Research Centre is part of the "Research Citadel" that over the years has become a container for public and private research initiatives. It currently hosts 86 employees and its research and technological innovation activities are focused on metallic, polymeric and ceramic materials for structural and functional applications.

The Santa Teresa Research Centre is located in the Gulf of La Spezia, over an area a little larger than half a hectare, and hosts 31 staff employees. It is specialised in research on the Mediterranean climate and marine environment through laboratories and equipment for experimental studies and research in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, sedimentology and environmental radioactivity.

Then there are five research laboratories in Faenza, Foggia, Ispra, Lampedusa and Montecuccolino, where research activities are carried out on topics related to each Department of the Agency.

ENEA also has a network of 16 Territorial Offices that provide the regional governments, local authorities and production facilities with consulting, technical and scientific support and training and information services, the transfer of know-how and the implementation of measures to improve energy efficiency for energy and environmental planning and management of incentive tools having a local value.

The Territorial Offices are able to identify local needs and to match them with the activities and scientific competencies present in the Agency as well as to act as a link between decision-makers of public and private sectors to favour the adoption of energy and environmental sustainability criteria in the local development processes.
