WORKSHOP Sustainable Energy in the Mediterranean

European Parliament - Brussels 23 November 2017

The Role of Energy Regulators and Agencies for Energy Conservation

MEDREG (Association of Mediterranean Energy Regulators) and MEDENER (Mediterranean Association of the National Agencies for Energy Conservation, under the ENEA’s presidency) ) organized this workshop in coherence with their respective Action Plans to explore synergies between the action of Mediterranean regulators and agencies for energy conservation. The event is part of the work programme of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Platform that aims at contributing to the objective of facilitating the energy transition in the Mediterranean region. The workshop had the aim to analyse legislative and regulatory practices to manage and promote energy efficiency and renewable energy sources (RES) in Mediterranean countries. Based on the current regulatory framework, the workshop tried to identify and discuss practices which can promote a coherent legislative approach to energy efficiency and RES in the region. Furthermore, the workshop tried to answer the following questions:

  • What are national best practices for energy efficiency and promotion of RES that could be replicated in the Southern shore of the Mediterranean?
  • How can we coordinate the action of regulators and agencies for energy conservation to promote a coherent energy transition in the region?
  • How can we use the UfM Energy Platforms to promote the said best practices in energy efficiency and RES promotion?
