Low-wavenumber femtosecond coherent Raman spectrometer

Low-wavenumber femtosecond coherent Raman spectrometer

The Project deals with the measurement of the vibrational frequencies of molecular bonds involving heavy atoms or molecular groups in a sample. Such information is useful for identification and detection of molecular species in materials science applications and biophotonics. Experimentally, measurements are performed by an instrument (spectrometer) which detects the modifications of a “probe” femtosecond laser pulse produced by the interaction with a coherent molecular vibrational state previously produced in the sample by a “pump” pulse, according to the so-called Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) process. Italy-USA visit exchanges are planned to promote the scientific cooperation.

PARTNERSHIP

ENEA, "Sapienza" University of Rome, Texas A&M University

Starting with the current state of the art, the Project aims to improve the performances of an SRS-based spectrometer in order to reduce the data acquisition time and increase the sensitivity, employing a single femtosecond laser source to guarantee ease of use and affordability of the apparatus.
