The goals of the meeting are to:
- illustrate the guidelines and strategies developed under the IDEM project to identify marine protected areas in the deep sea;
- list and describe existing areas in the Mediterranean Sea where there is already an international consensus to identify protected areas in the deep and offshore;
- propose to extend the current marine protected areas to include critical deep-sea ecosystems.
The project IDEM aims to support the next phase of MSFD implementation for the Mediterranean deep Sea (below 200 m of depth). The project is coordinated by Polytechnic University of Marche (Italy), with the involvement of institutional partners of the Mediterranean area from EU and non-EU countries (8 EU partners and the University of Tel Aviv Israel as non-EU member).
