Modeling scenario suggests that wind energy will represent more than one third of electricity production in European Union from renewable energies by 2020. European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) predicts a total wind energy installed capacity in 2020, equal to 230 GW including 40 GW offshore. The cumulative electric energy production at 2020, is 581 TWh. Onshore wind energy will remain dominant till 2030 but installations at sea will become increasingly important and the energy production (562 TWh) will become comparable with the onshore one (591 TWh) since 2030. Offshore wind energy production in shallow waters is a mature sector in Northern European Seas, while applications in Mediterranean Seas is still at a very early stage level. Opportunities can be achieved by accelerating the offshore wind technologies and the increasing interest of financial investors in this sector is a clear sign of the development of a new “green” economy that can reduce negative effects of the actual global economic crisis. Large size wind turbines on floating platforms in deep waters, new materials applications, grid integration, operation and maintenance techniques are some of new technologies to be tested and deployed, while lowering costs. Since 1994 OWEMES seminar has been a meeting point among industries, researchers and other institutional organizations; experts from all over the world have had the opportunities to exchange experiences and start collaboration for common projects or initiatives.
OWEMES 2012 , the 7th edition , confirms the multidisciplinary feature, including also other marine energies, and hopes to meet the challenges and
demands by the related sectors, developing new strategies under an high level international framework.
